Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Women sit proudly on top of Conference 2 of the BIDL League after a 59-37 win over local rivals St. Paul’s Killarney at Mercy Mounthawk Gym on Friday night securing their third win in a row. Captain Holly O’Brien top scored with 22 points and she was ably assisted by Priya O’Donovan, Claire O’Sullivan and Grace Lucid with 8 each and Niamh Collins with 7 in a dominant display.
The Warriors totally controlled the exchanges in the opening quarter racing to a 12-6 at the midway point with Priya O’Donovan and Holly O’Brien combining for the hosts while St. Paul’s response came from Jade Potts with a couple from inside. Warriors spread the game with a run to quarter time and Holly O’Brien, Priya O’Donovan and Grace Lucid firing down another score each to see the Tralee side 20-6 up at the first break.
Sorcha Casey’s first of the night pushed the Warriors further ahead and a three from Claire O’Mahony added to by a quick double from Grace Lucid put 24 between the sides. Holly O’Brien was again on target before the halftime break with a score from outside to see the Warriors take a 34-8 lead to the long break.
St. Paul’s came out fighting in the third and began to pare back the lead with threes from Ava Sheehan and two from Cassandra Buckley to spark a revival. However another major score from Claire O’Mahony kept the Warriors lead intact and it was back out to 20 points when Kelly Fitzgerald opened her account. Holly O’Brien and Niamh Collins struck late for the Warriors to see their side take a 48-21 lead into the final quarter.
Siobhan Burns knocked down a three early in the fourth for the visitors but that was quickly countered by scores from Claire O’Mahony and Grace Lucid. St. Paul’s replied through Cassandra Buckley, Jade Potts and Ava Sheehan but with Niamh Collins and Anna O’Sullivan adding late on for Warriors it sealed a comfortable 59-37 win in the end.
